Closed Thursday and Memorial Day Reminder


Just a reminder:  We’re closed for preschool and daycare this Thursday, May 23, to prepare for preschool graduation that evening.  We’re also closed on Monday, May 27th for Memorial Day.  We will be open Friday, May 24th regular hours.

Summer 2019 Calendar & Class Schedule

May 22nd -- Last Day of School Sunshine School

May 23rd -- Closed/Sunshine School Graduation

May 24th -- Start Summer Daycare

May 27th -- Memorial Day (Closed)

May 29th -- Last Day of School NLCS

June 13th -- The 23rd Psalm

We will be open regular daycare hours the week of May 28th to 31st.

Daycare rates are $1 an hour per child.  Please let us know in advance if your child will or will not be attending.  We’re open 6:30-5:30.  Children need to bring a lunch, a drink, and a fork and/or spoon if needed.  We do not microwave.  Children also need to bring a blanket and pillow for rest time after lunch.

We can give kids rides back and forth from Cat Camp if needed.

We will be learning about the 23rd Psalm this summer.  Class times are from 9:00 to 1:00 on Thursdays.  Lunch is from 11:00 to 12:00 every day. 

Please bring a package of napkins (200-count package) for the summer.

Rena will be tutoring between 9:00 and 5:30 this summer.  Please let her know as soon as possible if you are interested.

May Notes


Thank you to everyone who participated in our fundraiser.  We made $660.

We will be closed for both preschool and daycare on Thursday, May 23rd, to prepare for preschool graduation that evening.  We will reopen on Friday.

May 2019 Newsletter


Week of April 30th to May 2nd -- Continue Dinosaurs Unit--Pteranodon, Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus Rex; Environment

Week of May 7th to 9th -- Mother's Day, Environment

Week of May 14th to 16th -- Ocean

Week of May 21st to 23rd -- Summer
May 23rd -- Graduation at 7:00, no preschool or daycare


We will be continuing to practice graduation songs this month.

There will not be any class or extended care on Thursday, May 23rd.  For students not graduating, cost for the week will be $22.  For students graduating it will be $32.

Graduation will be Thursday, May 23rd at 7:00 p.m.  All the graduates need to be here at 6:45 to get ready.  Graduation will begin at 7:00 for parents, relatives, and friends.  It will be here at the preschool.  Graduation is only for the kids who will be attending kindergarten next year.  The children will be wearing caps and gowns.  Girls—please do not wear ponytails or anything on top of your head.  Refreshments will follow the ceremony.

Rena will be tutoring children this summer.  This is for children going into kindergarten through Algebra.  If you are interested, please let us know.  We are trying to finalize that schedule.

Spring Mill Field Trip Reminders and Notes


Tomorrow, Thursday, April 25th, is our field trip to Spring Mill from 9:00 to 2:00.  We have enough parents helping, thanks!  Everyone needs to bring a sack lunch and 2 cans of pop or juice.  Please have your child wear a jacket and tennis shoes.  Everyone needs to be here at 8:30.  We will still be going to Spring Mill and do what we can unless it’s storming.

Easter Party and Spring Mill Field Trip Reminders

The Easter Party will be tomorrow, Thursday, April 18th.  There are currently 22 people in the class.  Will the following children please bring a special snack:  Logan Sims, Michael Thompson, Allie Turner, Silas Widau, Kinzley Chastain, and Nolan Melton.

Next Thursday, April 25th, is our field trip to Spring Mill from 9:00 to 2:00.  Please let us know by Tuesday, April 23rd, if you can drive and help us.  We still need help.  Everyone needs to bring a sack lunch and 2 cans of pop or juice.  This is our only field trip.

Fund-Raiser Reminder, Summer Plans, & Preschool Registration

Our fund-raiser ends this Thursday, April 4th.  Please return money to exchange for the Peel-to-Save cards on or before that day.

We need to know as soon as possible about everyone’s plans for this summer for daycare and tutoring so we can know how make sure we have enough spots for everyone.

We have already started registering kids for next year for preschool.  We have a few spots left, including the kids returning from this year.  If you know of anyone interested, please have them get with us soon.

Valentine’s Day Party Reminder

Just a reminder:  This Thursday, February 14th, we will have a Valentine’s Day Party and Valentine Day Card Exchange.  We will be making Valentine’s Delivery Trucks for our valentine cards.  Please do not put any other children’s names on the card’s outside or envelopes.  Each child sends one to everyone in the class, but they just sign their own names on the back of the cards.  There are currently 22 people in the class.  The cards should be brought by February 12th.

Sunshine School February Newsletter

Week of January 29th to 30th -- G & H Week, Groundhogs Day, Hats, Position Review

Week of February 5th to 7th -- K & L Week, Kings, Library, Abraham Lincoln

Week of February 12th to 14th -- I & J Week, Ice Cream, Jellybeans, Valentine's Day

We will be studying about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.  Your child should know many interesting facts about them by the end of the month.

On Thursday, February 14th, we will have a Valentine’s Day Party and Valentine Day Card Exchange.  We will be making Valentine’s Delivery Trucks for our valentine cards.  Please do not put any other children’s names on the card’s outside or envelopes.  Each child sends one to everyone in the class, but they just sign their own names on the back of the cards.  There are currently 22 people in the class.  The cards should be brought by February 12th.

We will be evaluating the students that will be entering kindergarten next year beginning the week of February 26th.

REMINDER:  If the North Lawrence schools are called off because of the weather, we will also be called off.  Also, if there is a two-hour delay class will be from 10:00-1:00.  Daycare will still be open regular hours those days.


If we miss 1 school day because of weather, you still need to pay for that day.  If we miss 2 or 3 days of any one week, you only pay for 1 day missed that week.

Sunshine School January Newsletter

Week of January 8th to 10th -- A & B Week, Arctic, All About You, Begin Positions Unit, Under & On Week, Winter

Week of January 15th to 17th -- C & D Week, Dentist, Martin Luther King Day, All About Me, In & Between Week, Winter, Begin Writing Names and Tying Shoes

Week of January 22nd to 24th -- E & F Week, Eskimos, Friends, All About Me,  Winter, Begin Addresses and Phone Numbers 


We will begin going through the alphabet again.  This time we will work on objects beginning with each letter, color pictures, and write the letters.

This month we are also working on a unit called “All About Me”; positions; writing their names; and learning to tie their shoes, addresses, phone numbers, and birthdays.

Christmas Party Reminder

Next Thursday, December 20th, we will have our Christmas Party and Gift Exchange.  The gift should cost around $5.00.  The boys need to bring a boy’s gift and the girls need to bring a girl’s gift.  Please bring your gift by this Thursday, December 13th.  Will the following children please bring a special snack for the party:  Avarey Hernandez, Lillie Holmes, Amelia Johnson, and Noah Myers.  There are currently 20 people in the class.

Please remember to have your child bring something for Show and Tell on their assigned day.  This is important, as it is their first public speaking.

We will be sending home advent chains on November 29th.  The children should take off one candy cane each day starting at the bottom beginning on Saturday, December 1st.  When they take off the last one, the next day will be Christmas, so count the sticker as Christmas Day.

We are having a Parents’ Night Out on December 7th from 7:00 to 10:00 pm.  We will have crafts, videos, snacks, songs, and books.  The cost will be $5 per child.  Older siblings are welcome to come too.  We hope that this will give you an evening to shop, wrap gifts, or just relax.  We need to know if your kids are coming by Monday, December 3rd so we can plan.

Parents’ Night Out

We are having a Parents’ Night Out on December 7th from 7:00 to 10:00 pm.  We will have crafts, videos, snacks, songs, and books.  The cost will be $5 per child.  We hope that this will give you an evening to shop, wrap gifts, or just relax.  Older siblings are welcome to come too.  We need to know if your kids are coming by Monday, December 3rd so we can plan.

Election Day Reminder Note

There isn’t any school on Tuesday, November 6th for Election Day.  We will open for daycare like normal from 6:30 to 5:30.  Kids coming for daycare that day need to bring a lunch with a drink and a blanket and pillow.  Please let us know if your kids will be coming that day.

Harvest Party and Picture Reminder Note

A couple of reminders:  Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 31st, we will be having our Harvest Party, instead of a Halloween Party.  The children need to come to class dressed as something related to farming or autumn (or something else not scary).  Will the following children please bring a special treat for our party:  Finley Crane, Jack Crouch, Rebekah Ford, and Henley Free.  We divide the class up to have some kids bringing snacks to each party.

Also, school picture orders and money are due this Thursday, November 1st.

In our safety unit we are presenting dangers and what to do or how to avoid them.  We want the children to be aware.  If you have any questions, please let us know.

We will be closed for Fall Break for preschool from October 16th to 18th.  We will also be closed for daycare from October 15th to 19th.

About Your Teachers

          Rohnda is married to Bob, who is a retired fisheries research biologist at the Avoca Fish Hatchery.  She has two daughters—Rena (see below) and Robyn.  Rohnda has a bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University in elementary education with a minor in kindergarten.  She holds a master’s degree from Indiana University in elementary education with an emphasis in early childhood.  Rohnda began teaching third grade at Brownstown Elementary.  This is her 33rd year to have Sunshine School.  Rohnda and Rena attend Englewood Baptist Church.  Rohnda likes to collect magnets and owls and to read, read, read, and read when she can find the time.


          Rena graduated from Milligan College in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood and elementary education.  This is her 19th year teaching.  She likes to coupon, read, shop, and watch sports, particularly IU, the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, and Chicago Cubs.
